Pancake Day - Potato Pancakes for Dogs

That glorious day of the year is back again....Pancake Day!

Last year we tried some doggie friendly peanut butter and banana pancakes (you can read that post here) which got Hendrix's seal of approval. So to mix things up a bit we thought we would try something different and tested a savoury option, potato pancakes.

Now I am the first to admit that I am no master chef, plus I cannot flip a pancake to save my life. However the best thing about cooking for your dog is they are never going to criticise your cooking! They will eat anything! Regardless of it's appearance or whether you flipped it too high and stuck it to the ceiling (which I didn't do) or stuck it to the pan (which I did do...twice!), they will still be grateful for your efforts and act like it's the best thing they have ever eaten.

The Ingredients

  • 3 medium sized potatoes (with skins on)

  • Salt

  • ½ cup of milk

  • 2 medium eggs

  • 2 tablespoons of butter

  • Topping of your choice - we went with apple sauce but you can use anything you like

Once you have collected your ingredients, and your cooking buddy, you are ready to begin.

The Recipe

  1. Boil the potatoes in salted water for about 30 minutes or until nice and tender.

  2. Separate the yolk from the egg whites of the 2 medium eggs.

  3. Mash your potatoes and mix in the 2 egg yolks and ½ cup milk until smooth.

  4. Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold into the mashed potatoes mix. Warning: If you don't use an electric whisk, this takes a while and is way more of a workout than you would like!

  5. Melt half the butter into a frying pan and when nice and hot, spoon a ping pong ball sized amount of mashed potato mix into the pan. Or a massive dollop if you are like me!

  6. Flatten the lump slightly with spatula and allow it to brown well on both sides. I recommend adding more butter throughout cooking to make sure the pancakes do not stick to the pan because then you end up with hash browns instead!

  7. Repeat this process with the rest of the mixture making sure to melt the butter in the pan before making each new pancake.

  8. Add topping and serve!

(Apologies for the old photos, this post originally appeared on Hendrix's blog back in 2018, they are that old they have my very first (terrible) logo on!!)

So there you have it, a tasty alternative to pancakes. If you are like me and had to take a few attempts to get a (half) decent pancake, the failed attempts make great stuffing for a Kong, or just to mix in with meat for tea!

If you decide to give these a try for yourself, please let me know how you get on,

Happy Pancake Day,

Emma & Hendrix
